Our Guide To Rugs
The right rug can make or break a room. Rugs add color, texture and style while also making the space cozy and inviting. But it can be tricky to get the size and placement right. So today we pulled together this quick guide by room with the best tips and tricks for buying the perfect rug for your space!
Living Rooms
- A popular layout is to place your furniture so that the front two legs of each sofa or chair sit on the rug.
- For a larger room, you can opt for a rug that is large enough to contain all four legs of any sofas, chairs, coffee tables or side tables. Most common sizes are 8×10, 9×12, & 10×14. (We always say bigger the better)!
- A rug should help define and accent the space, not look like wall- to-wall carpeting. Leave at least 12-18 inches of exposed floor space between the rug and walls.
- If the rug is too small it can make your room feel smaller and a bigger rug will make the space feel bigger! Always be sure the front legs of all your furniture are on the rug or it’s too small.
Dining Rooms
- Choose a rug that is large enough to fit all four chair legs, even when the chairs are pulled out. You’ll want to leave at least 24″ of room between the backs of the chairs and the edges of the rug.
- Consider if the table has extending leaves. If so, you’ll want to choose a rug size that can accommodate the table with or without them.
- Leave at least 1 foot of floor around the perimeter of the room.
- Most common dining room rug sizes are 6×9, 8×10 & 9×12
Bedrooms
King Size Bed
- Leave a small space from the nightstands to the beginning of the rug
- Make sure the rug extends the bed by at least 1 foot.
- Typical rug size for a King bed is 9×12.
Queen Size Bed
- Make sure your rug doesn’t extend the width of the nightstands.
- Make sure the rug has at least 8” of space on the sides of the bed.
- Typical rug size for a Queen bed is 8×10.

Layering Rugs
Layering rugs can define and highlight your space. There are times when you have a specific rug you’d like to use for a space, but perhaps you don’t have the size option you need and it is too small for the space. Layering it on top of a larger neutral rug is a great way to incorporate it in the space. Any rugs can be layered in your space. Try using a thin, neutral rug for a base. The top layer can be anything that fits the space. If you can order samples of the rug and see how it looks in the space and next to the neutral rug you want to layer it with.
Rug Pads
If you don’t have a rug pad, you need one. Not only does it make it a lot more comfortable, but it’ll save the life of your rug and help keep it in place. Here is a link to a high quality rug pad with a lot of size options.
Indoor/Outdoor Rugs
We love using indoor/outdoor rugs because they are not only great for patios, but they are great for high traffic areas like front doors and mudrooms. You can easily spray them off to clean them.
